As a matter of fact, its not a bug, wordpress reserve 4 digit number in url for yearly archive. I just simply remove the rewrite rules stored in MySql. If you want to reset to orignal rewrite rules, go to Permalink Settings and Save Changes. Since I need a unique “home” page for each year, I decided to use a category with a clean slug such as 2018, 2019, etc. I don’t need dates in the article slugs because each one is and will remain unique. This plugin does the trick perfectly.
